But isn’t it smart to make sure that your heaters and chimneys are in the best shape for fall and winter ahead of time, instead of being met with any unpleasant surprises when the cold hits?

To get the most of your fireplace in six months or so, it’s important that you maintain and clean out your chimneys appropriately, and we want to help you with all of your chimney cleaning needs.

These are 3 major signs that your chimney needs to be swept:

1. Low burning fire

If you felt like you struggled to start a fire in your fireplace the last time it was cold, it’s probably because your chimney is all clogged up, or that there’s a problem with the fireplace damper. Both these issues can prevent a fire from receiving a sufficient oxygen supply in order to burn properly.

2. Black oil spots on your fireplace walls

The black spots on your fireplace’s walls are called creosote, which is a tar-like substance. This substance can build up all throughout your chimney—up to the top— and ultimately block the flow of air up and out of your fireplace. This lack of regular airflow over time can cause fires to burn irregularly.

3. Campfire smell emanating from your fireplace

Creosote has a potent smell similar to that of a campfire, and it is easily smelled within the vicinity of the fireplace. Yes, you might enjoy this special smell (it’s enough to make you rent an RV and buy out all the chocolate, marshmallows, and graham crackers in sight), but it is usually a sign that there is a potentially deadly buildup of creosote in your chimney. This eventually can catch fire and cause terrible damage to your house and belongings.

So, we do know that it’s springtime in April and that we’re a long way from the winter months (most of us are concerned with planning our summer vacations and building those summer tans, that’s for sure).
